Erika Riedel, Sports Editor
Senior Erika Riedel enjoys volunteering and spreading awareness for multiple organizations. This summer, she volunteered at a number of places, including East Bay SPCA, Community Reading Buddies, and Aegis Assisted Living.
Her favorite place was the East Bay SPCA animal shelter. Riedel said, “I started a couple months ago and it’s nice to go once a week because I can give back to my community.” Riedel is a big fan of animals, and she has adopted two pets from another shelter.
In addition to her work with animals, Riedel spent time working with senior citizens at the Aegis Assisted Living in Moraga. She noted that while she only worked there for a few hours, she had a great time “…[getting] a different perspective on people..” as not many people take the time to talk with seniors. Riedel learned that there is quite a lot of wisdom to be found in a retirement home.
Riedel was also a youth mentor for preschool and 1st grade students in Oakland, helping to improve and develop their reading skills. Riedel’s volunteer work has allowed her to “gain a window into the different perspectives that people in my society have.”
