Homework has always been a controversial subject amongst students and teachers. Despite many students disliking homework and wishing their teachers would assign less, teachers continue to pile on the homework as students get older.
Many highschoolers feel like their teachers assign too much homework and don’t recognize it. Senior Lucy Kao believes that homework, “…can be beneficial but I also think that some teachers assign a lot of busy work and homework doesn’t always relate to what we’re doing in class.” She thinks that the amount of homework depends on the class but that she has had experiences with being assigned too much homework in years past. She thinks it would be more beneficial for students if teachers did more in class teaching and would diversify the ways they teach material.
Sophomore Troy Yavuzer-Judd said homework has, “become a thing where it’s not very supplemental to the learning of students around the world and it’s more given to incentivized keeping students busy and it’s just work to assign work.” He feels that Campo specifically is pretty tame homework wise but should still be toned down more. He feels like it would be more beneficial for students to be more engaged by the learning whether that’s by a more engaging teaching style or something else, students just should be more engaged. Similarly, junior Maddie Carpenter isn’t a big fan of homework. She said she feels like teachers assign too much homework, but it also varies for her from class to class.
Freshman Kyden Bronson said, “…homework is beneficial when assigned correctly and when there’s not too much but I do think homework is beneficial to keeping your understanding of topics and to further your understanding of topics outside of school.” He also experiences a range for the amount of homework assigned to him. Some of his teachers assign a lot of homework, but recognize it, and he has others that don’t assign a lot of homework. He said that teachers “really need to find a good in between where your students aren’t too worried and have too much anxiety outside of school, but also they don’t drop their understanding of the topics when they’re not at school.” He is able to recognize the benefits of having homework yet he knows that there needs to be a balance.
Overall the students at Campo feel like they are assigned too much busy work versus homework. They feel like there should be less work to do at home, especially when it’s only busy work.
