“There’s nothing like jumping off a platform 200 feet in the air to get over your fear of heights,” said senior Joelle Nelson. It’s how she got interested in the world of daring sports.

Nelson started zip-lining at the age of 10, but was afraid of heights until she was 11. Now she enjoys activities like white water rafting, skiing, cross-country skiing, hot air ballooning, climbing ropes courses, and hopes to hang glide and bungee jump in the future.

For her 14th birthday, she was treated to a hot air balloon ride above Napa Valley. “Only once though, because it’s so expensive,” she said.

She also went white water rafting for the first time last summer in Whistler, Canada, and once explored a cave with her uncle.

“I don’t really have a favorite [extreme sport]. They are all really fun,” she said.

Why does she enjoy them so much? “I value experiences more than I do material things.”
