Junior Varsity players roam the field at sunset.

Both girls’ varsity and junior varsity soccer teams competed against Acalanes on January 21. As the 2 schools are rivals in nearly every other sport offered, the game came with much anticipation.

The junior varsity team played a tough game, with strong defense from both teams. The game ended in a tie of 1-1. Although the final score wasn’t ideal, players were proud of the work they put in.

Freshman Nidhi Pradheep said, “I thought we all played really hard. I think we had some great passes and some really impressive shots. Overall, it was [a] pretty tough [game], so [we] definitely worked hard.”

Freshman Sophia Ahrens said, “Even though we didn’t win, I thought we all played really hard and fought well.”

While both teams played well, the team was able to note the improvements needed to up the scoreboard. “I think we need to connect our passes, and overall play harder defense. At times, I think we needed to be more aggressive about the way we were playing; making sure we were always on our toes,” said Pradheep.

The girls’ varsity soccer team also played a difficult game, with Acalanes winning with a final score of 2-0. Freshman players expressed their feelings of disappointment.

“The final score was well deserved for Acalanes, but it was hard for us considering they are one of our biggest rivals, and this is our first year playing them,” said freshman Sara Brockmeier.

“I feel a little disappointed and upset about the final score, but I know there’s more chances to come for me as a 1st-year player, and all the other players [on the team],” said freshman Julia Whitney.

However, players maintained a sense of pride, even after the loss. “I think my team played very well. We put our full effort [into the game] and everyone did their best even while being on the losing side,” explained Whitney.

Players also noted the changes needed to be made in order to win their following games. Whitney added, “In the future, [with] a little more practice and teamwork, we can achieve our goals [of winning].”

“I think we can work on taking more shots and being more aggressive to win the ball from the opponent,” noted Brockmeier. “But still, we played as a team and tried our best.”

With more games against Bay Area rivals to come, the girls’ soccer program can hopefully still turn it around, and get some more wins before the season’s end on February 12.
