Boys’ basketball pushed their win streak to 11 games, and extended their lead in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League [DFAL] by crushing Acalanes 64-49 in their 19th game of the season on January 30.
Winners of 17 of their last 19 games, the Cougars controlled much of the contest, but Acalanes went on a brief scoring run during the 1st half. “We gave them [Acalanes] hope in the first half,” said junior Sean Yamamoto.
One of the league’s weaker programs, Acalanes has only won 5 out of their first 21 games.
“We could have came up with more energy and intensity,” Yamamoto said.
Senior Patrick Duryea said his squad needs to improve defensively. “We definitely need to practice getting up against shooters because in our league there are a lot of good shooters,” said Duryea.
“I think we had lots of silly mistakes and we missed a lot of slides. We had trouble covering really big players, like Joey Hewitt and their [Acalanes] shooters,” Duryea added.
“We shouldn’t take anyone lightly. We are going into games more focused and we will stay determined no matter who the opponent is,” Walker Franklin added.
Franklin said his team may have been looking ahead to other opponents in the early stages against the Dons. “We came out too confident and we expected to win because in our season so far we have been winning most games,” Franklin explained.
The Cougars have only lost to non-league opponents, Montgomery and Drake.
Campolindo is in first place in the DFAL standings, and lead 2nd place Las Lomas by 3.5 games.
