Campolindo Sweeps Miramonte in Opening Dual Meet

During a rainy Wednesday on March 6 at the Bob Wilson Stadium, over 200 athletes from Campolindo and Miramonte congregated at the track ready with excitement, nerves, and infectious energy. Despite the downpour, every event was on schedule, and as soon as the 3pm school bell rang, the athletes were already ready to run, jump, or throw no matter rain or shine.

Senior Alex Thomasson, who ran the 1600m, said, “It was cold and it was kind of rainy, so the weather was not favorable.” As soon as the meet began, rain started pouring, so everyone that was not about to compete huddled underneath a tent. Thomasson, on the other hand, prepared for his race. He said that in his race he “went out fast in the mile” and “kind of died, but I kicked it in and we ended up getting the points we needed.” While the mile was run under rainy conditions, the sun did make an appearance for the later races, and Thomasson said he was “happy we were able to win the 4×4.”

Senior Shea Volkmer took a similar take, saying “it was good. It was more of a workout type day.” Volkmer ran the 400m, 800m, and 4x400m relay, and said that “it was really rainy” but it “was a good first get-her-done type meet.”

Junior Siddharth Iyer, who ran the 1600m, said that “it was pretty fun” and “was a lot faster than I remember.” Iyer thought “the environment and the vibes were nice”, especially before the
race because all the athletes “were under the tent and talking about the races.”

Junior Ellie Doane had different reflections about the meet, saying “I did not do as well as I expected so it was a little stressful for me and I wish I did better.” However, Doane noted on a more hopeful tone, saying “but this is just the beginning of proving my progress and this is just the start of the season.” Doane ran 100m and the 200m, and commented that “the vibes were ideal, the weather was kind of cloudy, so it was harder to get warmed up”, but despite the weather troubles, she “pushed through.”

Sophomore Taejin Chung, who ran the 2 mile, commented that “the rain cleared so that was good when the sun came out.” Chung, who has been on the team for 2 years now, enjoys the Miramonte competition, saying “the guys are fun and it’s fun to run with them.” About his race, he said he’s “ happy with it” even though his first split was a lot faster than his second.

Freshman Jasmine McCasland shared her experience in her first ever Campolindo dual meet, saying “I was nervous because it was raining so I wasn’t sure if it would affect my race.” The rain did some damage aside from soaking the athletes, and McCasland said that “the sand was wet in the long jump pit” and “there was a puddle on the track.” McCasland ran the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x400m relay, and shared that she “liked running varsity as a freshman”, and her favorite was “the 100 meters.” McCasland shared that she’s excited and thinks she “can do better next week. This is a good starting point.”
