The girls’ basketball team started off Northern California tournament play with a victory in the 1st round against Placer. The final score was  62-47.

The Cougars gained a lead of  9-2 in the first 5 minutes. They ended the 1st quarter with at 15-7.

“At half time we talked about focus and not letting up. The need to stay consistent and continue to get better,” said coach Elgin Leslie.

Placer could not recover from Campo’s early aggressive play, and trailed the entire game.

Junior Ashley Ewing scored a career high 32 points. “It felt really good considering that was the most points I have ever scored, and also stepping up for my team,” said Ewing. She also pointed out the importance of not underestimating their opponent. “We had a feeling we were going to win but we didn’t want to go out thinking that it was going to be an easy game, so we stayed focused and we played our best,” she explained.

The girls followed their opening win with a hard fought victory over Christian Brothers in Sacramento on Saturday, March 9, winning 57-55.
