Varsity girls’ basketball split its season opening games, losing to Piedmont while beating Hayward.
After the games, Senior Mallory Brown reported that overall, it was “a little iffy because we do have 9 new comers and a new coach.”
Still, the players are confident that they will win in their game on December 6th against Terra Nova.
Their new coach, Elgin Leslie, expects a lot from his team. “We hope to improve with every practice and improve with every game and to play at our best ability. On our next game against Terra Nova I want to see improvement from our last game and to play the best basketball in league,” he explained.
The players are confident in their coach. “He is very intelligent but also knows how to explain his system. He came from a really successful program and has already improved this team a lot more than any other coach could,” said Senior Annelise Ito.
Despite Ito’s injury, suffered during off season scrimmaging, she continues to support her teammates. Her biggest concern is the learning curve associated with changing coaches. “We are at a disadvantage because we have to learn a new system when other teams already have one. But I believe by season we’ll be in really good shape to perform at our best,” said Ito.
“We expect to just keep practicing hard and gaining more chemistry on the court. We know were not going to be as good as last year or as good as we could be with Annelise but I still expect to have a pretty good season,” said Sophomore Ashley Ewing.
Their goals include “playing our best basketball in February and March and hopefully making it
to Nor Cals for the third year in a row,” said Brown.
“One goal this season is to work well as a team. Because we have lost so many players from last year, a lot of this year’s players are new to playing with one another; but, as long as we learn to play together, we will do fine,” said Laura Hickey
