Wirth Tops Freshman Volleyball Newcomers

Freshman Kelly Wirth, varsity outside hitter, has shattered all previous conceptions of freshman volleyball ability with an outstanding start to the Campolindo girls’ volleyball season.

Varsity coach Scott Bishop said of Wirth, “She is having one of the best freshman seasons I can remember.”

Kelly Wirth was called to varsity tryouts in August. “I was excited and nervous at the same time,” Wirth stated.  She made the cut along with two other freshmen, Kenzie Brown and Annie Doyle.

Already, her coaches have been praising her. “Kelly is hitting at veteran level. She is one of the best hitters on the team,” head coach Bishop said.

The team has been very accepting of Wirth, Brown, and Doyle. “We have awesome team chemistry, and I think that’s definitely the most important aspect of the game,” Wirth explained.

Wirth was out of practices for the first two weeks of the season due to knee injury. But she has come back impressively.

Bishop said, “She missed the O’Dowd match, but has started every match since then and has done extremely well.”

Wirth believes that this year, they will continue the Campo girls’ volleyball legacy. “This year, we are going to step up and hold the spot as the best in California. We have awesome coaches. Scott and Carrie are so encouraging and they both have great coaching techniques.

“I have seen a lot of players come through Campo in my ten years,” Bishop said, “and she will be one to watch if she is this good her freshman year.”
