The track and field team hosted Acalanes and Dublin on Wednesday, April 23. Campolindo was only scored against Acalanes because they had already competed against Dublin on March 26.
The varsity girls, frosh-soph girls, and frosh-soph boys beat rival Acalanes with scores of 77-59, 94-26, and 86-39, respectively. The varsity boys were beaten 61.5-74.5. It was the first loss for the varsity boys, who remain in contention for a league championship.
“Our boys’ team has struggled this year with maintaining high levels of performance across the board,” coach Charles Woolridge said. However, Woolridge mentioned the achievements of the boys’ distance runners providing points in the mile, 2-mile, and 800 events along with Marcus Harland-Dunaway’s wins in both the 110 and 300 hurdle events.
“Unfortunately, our horizontal jumps and pole vault were areas in which we struggled,” Woolridge said. “Acalanes took advantage of that.”
Woolridge said that veteran athletes led the girls’ team. Junior Brighie Leach won both the 1600 and 800 events and junior Maddy Daum set a personal record in discus with a distance of 103 feet and 4 inches. Miranda Protzen also won the pole vault with a height of 9 feet.
“We also had some great contributions from new athletes,” Woolridge said. Freshman Julie Hyatt won the 400-meters and Juliet Arnswald acheived a height of 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump. Mariah Brown ran a 49.95 second 300 meter hurdles.
Junior Jack Shurtz said he did not perform to the best of his abilities, but still got a personal best in the discus.
Shurtz said that Acalanes is a rival that motivates him and the rest of the team to perform better. Freshman Ashley Lee agreed, adding that having friends on the Acalanes team makes her more competitive.
“We’ve been working really hard at practice and I can see improvement,” Lee said. “The work is paying off.”
