Leadership put together a game of Capture the Flag on March 15 during Academy in order to help the freshman class bond with each other. Freshmen were able to sign up to play or just to watch and hang out with their friends. A total of 38 people showed up to play, along with another 20 who came to watch. Freshmen Finley Cattell explained about deciding on the activity, that “[her] and the other freshman class officers came up with the idea to create more school spirit and bonding within the freshman class,”

Everyone who signed up was put into two teams, red and blue. Both teams had 19 players. Leadership tried to make the teams as even as possible, but Cattell said that “[She] had to do a little bit of switching of the teams to make it more fair,” as the teams were unbalanced.

The game itself was intense, with lots of scoring and steals. Freshman Isaac Narido wowed spectators with his touchdowns, and freshman Nitin Ravikumar was a key player as well. Another leadership representative, freshman Lils McCarthy said that “some MVP players were [freshmen] Violet Fok, Elijah Lee, Isabelle Maher and Nitin Ravikumar,” when commenting about the game. McCarthy also played in the game, on the Blue team which swept the Red team with an ending score of 10-4.

McCarthy stated, “It was really fun to play, and I think the spectators enjoyed it too.” After the game, leadership had cupcakes for spectators and players to enjoy. This helped create a festive atmostphere. Cattell explained that: “Originally it was going to be ‘Capture the Cake’ and only the winner would get to eat the cake, but [they] realized that it would be sad for the losers.” Freshman Cayley Chang announced the game, exciting spectators and keeping them updated on the game. Cattell explained, “It was definitely a fun bonding experience for the players and fans.”

(she/her) Freshman Ashley Purcell is a writer and photographer for The Claw. She sparked an interest in journalism last year when she came across the publication.  In her free time, she loves to bake and hang-out with friends. She has been dancing since she was 4 years old and continues to pursue dancing at CAPA because of her passion for it and the results she has seen.  Her adoration for it is shown when she shares, “I just like that it takes a long time to get good and you have an end result that is clear.”  On top of baking, hanging out with friends, and dancing she loves Taylor Swift. “She's her own genre.” said Purcell.
