David Hemenway of Wells Fargo spoke to the STEM [Science Technology Engineering and Math] club in late January.  According to STEM club president sophomore Lauren Sampson, Hemenway clarified for club members the usefulness of a college degree in economics.

Hemenway spoke to students about his own experiences in the business world, including his job hunt, and the skills he currently uses working for a financial institution.

According to Hemenway, STEM experience will be helpful for just about any career path they choose.

STEM club vice president Sophia Cortese said, “I thought he brought a new side to STEM and it’s a broad category because they’re just so things that just fall into science, technology, engineering, and math, there are so many categories and I think in any job you do I think there are jobs in STEM.”

Cortese said, “I did enjoy the speaker, I have a lot of friends who’s parents are in the banking world and I thought it showed a lot of different sides of STEM. I learned that just in his daily job he’s working with clients and it requires a certain knowledge of basic math. He inspired me to show that any job you do, having a background in STEM is really important.”

STEM club vice president Devon Wood said, “I think it was interesting to hear it from him because his job isn’t as straight forward of a STEM field and I think it gave our club members a bigger outlook on the opportunities you can go into with a STEM background and how broad the field is, so I think that was really helpful.”
