Junior class parent advisers organized an advanced screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at the Walnut Creek Century theater on December 15, the night before the movie opened to the general public. Tickets were offered to Campolindo students, parents, and friends for $50 each. Class of 2018 officers reserved the theater’s largest auditorium, which seats approximately 220 people.

“My dad used to work for George Lucas Films, and he’s a really big Star Wars fan, so when the new one came out he really wanted to help fundraise for the class of 2018,” said junior secretary Izzy Artiaga, who helped organize the showing.

Since Walnut Creek’s Cinemark theater is a client of Christie Digital, Artiaga’s father’s employer, Campolindo was able to reserve the auditorium at no cost and collect the full $50 for each ticket, raising a total of $7,000 for the junior class.

“The whole event went smoothly,” Artiaga said. “It was fun to see friends and teachers somewhere other than school and the whole movie theater had a sense of community; we all laughed at the same parts and were surprised at others.”

“I thought it was really fun, and I’m glad I went because my Spanish teacher assigned extra credit related to one of the actors in the movie,” said sophomore Lindsay Torres.

Spanish teachers Maria Cadenas and Concha Martinez offered extra credit by asking their students to write a biography about Diego Luna, who was born in Mexico and played rebel officer Cassian Andor in the film.

Campolindo will hold another fundraiser on December 17, 2017, when Star Wars: Episode VIII is released.
