Maria Cadenas’ Spanish classes celebrated Dia de los Muertos by baking an excess of bread called Pan de Muertos on November 4.

Encouraged by the extra credit Cadenas offered, almost a third of students brought in homemade bread to class, which led to a lot of carb consumption during class time.

Cadenas said that including the culinary activity is one way to supplement the language curriculum. “It’s really important to not just know the language, but also the culture and traditions of the people,” she explained.

The unique activity was a hit with many of the student. Sophomore Spanish student Sofia West said, “I enjoyed learning about Spanish culture because it was different than just learning verbs and stuff out of a textbook. You actually learn what the culture is like and I think its better than menial bookwork.”

Sophomore Phioroz Duggal, another student of Cadenas, said, “I had quite a bit of tests that week, so just chilling in Spanish and celebrating Dia de los Muertos was a great way to release stress and to learn the Spanish culture as well.”

“I will definitely consider doing it again. I liked it, and my students liked it too,” Cadenas said.
