Through an exchange program facilitated by Claudia Windfuhr, the German teacher at Stanley Middle School in Lafayette, 15 students and 2 teachers from Heidelberg, Germany toured Campolindo on November 17.

The 2 week trip to the Bay Area was organized by the Heidelberg school. German students generally come to Campolindo every other year, but they have visited each of the last 2 years.

“It makes the whole learning of the German language kind of real because you see that people actually live there and that they’re not that much different than us, although their language is quite different,” said German instructor David Bloomberg.

The program is a benefit to both the traveling students and their hosts.  For Campolindo students, it was an opportunity to put a human face to the culture they have studied in text books and web activities.

“It’s great to have an opportunity to interact with students from another culture, Germany in particular. It allows my kids to spend a day around those students. They also come into my classes and give presentations on Heidelberg, on their school, and on their city and it’s really good,” Bloomberg said.
