The tiresome debate has closed. After long speculation and discussion, Campo leadership has announced that this year’s junior prom will be a long-dress occasion. In the past years, long dresses have always been reserved for senior ball, making the long-dress tradition a privilege exclusively for seniors. Furthermore, the recent increase of excitement among juniors has sparked conversation among seniors regarding tradition.
To junior Emma Wong, the change elevates the prom experience. “I’m really excited, because I think it makes prom more special,” Wong said. She added that the announcement has already prompted flurries of dress shopping and preparation. “I’m considering the color and looking around,” she said.
Despite the excitement among juniors, senior reactions have been mixed. “I think they might be a little surprised,” Wong said. The question of “fairness” comes up in the discussion, and many have heard, “If I couldn’t get to, why should they?”
The long-short dress debate has been a recurring topic at Campo for years, resurfacing each spring among the current juniors. Seniors who oppose the change mention the importance of preserving senior ball as a unique milestone. “People care about it because seniors want to make sure that it’s very special to them,” Wong explained. “They want the whole experience to feel different as a senior rather than a junior.”
Despite differing opinions, many students agree that the change is overdue. And as prom season approaches, the conversation appears to be settling. And with the decision finalized, students can now turn their attention towards dresses, dates, and anticipation.
