From sun burns to snow storms, each season has its own signature feature. We all have a favorite season that we look forward to: from the tank tops and tan lines of summer to the sweaters and scarfs of winter. However, there is a reason why one may be happier in one season than another. So students shared their feelings about why their emotions change throughout the seasons.
Senior Hayden Ricca stated, “For a long time my favorite season used to be winter. I could be cozy, watch movies and bake – but then I realized that I don’t have school during the summer. It started to click that there are cute outfits during the summer, I’m tan, and I don’t have to do homework…I can do all of the fun stuff that I do in winter in the summer.”
However, Ricca also had other reasons why winter is no longer her favorite season. “It’s a little bit depressing now because I have college applications so it’s just more stressful this winter. However, it’s also nostalgic because it used to be my favorite season and Christmas is coming up which is the best time of the year with the magic of Santa from when I was younger.” With college applications and the thought of how blissful winter used to be, Ricca has traded in her hot cocoa to enjoy the summer more than she used to.
While Ricca has her reasons why she enjoys one season over the other, senior Jackson Bartlett does not have a favorite season and likes each season for different reasons. Bartlett shared, “I like spring because after winter, everything looks all dead, but then in spring, you start seeing baby animals and everything comes alive again. Summer is nice because it’s kind of a continuation of spring, and when it gets [to be] a little bit too much, then you have fall. I love them all.”
Bartlett’s love for all seasons is a rare feeling as sophomore Abigail Dunning takes a more common opinion to heart. Like Ricca, Dunning feels like the summer is when she feels the happiest. She stated, “My favorite season is probably summer. When it’s warm out and you’re off school, you can go to the beach, and it’s fun to go on vacation. So in the summer I’m more happy and I like spending time with my friends or doing what I want to do instead of doing homework.”
While summer is Dunning’s favorite season, she also shared that the idea of approaching winter is great because of the holidays. Dunning expressed, “Winter starts and then there’s Christmas and the New Year. But then after that, it gets rainy and I just feel kind of sad…You’ve been in school for so long…I just feel tired and it’s cold so you have to stay inside.”
While physical rain may fall mainly during the wet season, the emotional rain that fills our eyes doesn’t discriminate by season. Students feel seasonal sadness at different times and feeling sad in one season over the other is common and completely normal. Sometimes the idea of what the next season is going to be like is fun and exciting, but when the season arrives, it may not be as joyful as we would have thought. However, everything passes and these feelings are never permanent. The most important thing is to do the best you can with every 24 hours you get. At the end of the day, we should live in the present, no matter what season it is.
