Long, Depressing Story Tarnishes Judge

Jack Moeller, Sports Editor

The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, boasts an interesting plot with well developed characters. Released on October 10, the film runs 2 hours and 21 minutes. In its opening weekend, The Judge raked in $13.3 million.

I expected the movie to have two great actors, but a weak plot, such as Iron Man III, Quantum of Solace, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. However, The Judge absolutely proved me wrong. It demonstrated both strong acting, and a strong plot.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Hank, an attorney, who ends up representing his father in a trial. His father, Joseph, played by Robert Duvall, is a judge.

There are many conflicts that motivate the action. For example, there are conflicts between father and son, Joseph and his town, and Hank and his former girlfriends. The variety of conflict makes the movie unpredictable.

Both Downey Jr. and Duvall fit their characters well.

My only problems with The Judge are the frequent arguing, which becomes tedious, and the length of the film. 2 hours and 21 minutes is long.

If you are looking for an inspirational, happy, and uplifting movie, The Judge may not be right for you.  It is intense and rather depressing.

If you are looking for exceptional acting and an interesting plot, The Judge should be on your list.
