Just over a week after the UConn Huskies’ 77-75 loss to No. 1 seed Florida, guard and Campo class of 2022 alumni Aidan Mahaney announced that he would be entering the NCAA transfer portal.
After a year that saw a decrease in Mahaney’s playtime and production, he will look to play for his third school in four years.
Mahaney transferred to UConn in 2024 after two quality seasons at his hometown school of Saint Mary’s where he averaged 13.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists across 69 games played for the Gaels.
This season, however, was much different for Mahaney. In 34 games with the Huskies, Mahaney had only five starts, all of them coming in the month of November. After performances of 10, 6, and 0 points at the Maui Invitational tournament, he was dropped from the starting lineup. He remained coming off the bench for the rest of the season.
Mahaney’s highest scoring game this season was a 15-point performance against Providence. Fifteen points was commonplace for Mahaney at Saint Mary’s.
Mahaney led the Gaels in scoring in his sophomore season, with his highest scoring games coming against Portland, San Diego and New Mexico. He scored 25 points in each of those games. He will look to replicate that sort of production at his next school.
Campo basketball head coach and Mahaney’s high school coach Steven Dyer declined to comment on where he thinks his former player will land, but said “a heavy ball screen offense that prioritizes the combo guard” would suit Mahaney’s skillset the best. Examples of this type of offense include Creighton, Saint Mary’s and University of Florida.
Mahaney recently posted on his Instagram account that he was visiting the basketball facilities at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The Gauchos are looking to make a splash in this year’s recruiting cycle, already landing five transfers and two commitments from highly-rated high school players. If Mahaney lands in Santa Barbara he would make an immediate impact as a solid combo guard and he would be a lot closer to home.
Mahaney will also be visiting Florida State and Florida Atlantic in the coming days, according to CBS Sports analyst Jon Rothstein.
Aidan Mahaney’s true landing spot for the 2025-26 season is still up in the air, but wherever he lands, the Campo community and the town of Moraga will be rooting for him.
