Boys’ Volleyball Dominates in NCS Championships
After an astoundingly successful season, the Campolindo boys’ varsity volleyball team found themselves at North Coast Section (NCS) championships, facing De La Salle in the final game of the season on May 12.
Campo went undefeated this season (8-0), but hadn’t yet played De La Salle. Despite this and a number of injuries, Campo was able to leave the court victorious with a 3-0 win, to which they carried out in a pretty dominant fashion.
Sophomore Will Balassi explained that “[the team] knew a lot of the guys coming in because of club volleyball, so [they] were pretty excited.” Balassi also mentioned that the team studied a lot of De La Salle’s game film, which allowed them to “exploit their weaknesses.”
The 1st 2 sets of the match were fairly close, but in the 3rd, it was obvious that Campo was the better team.
Solid passing between sophomore Graham Volk and senior Patrick Volk gave the Cougars a leg up throughout the game, as well as some major kills from seniors Josh Ewert and Nicolai Bell. Junior Andrew Pak once again brought the setting skills, and was a large component in Campo’s success.
However, Campolindo also felt the absence of 1 of its leading players, sophomore Will Marusich, who was out sick. In addition, Harvard commit senior Brian Thomas was forced to play through a bad ankle injury.
Even so, the team pulled off the win, fairly with ease. Sophomore Micheal Herrington explained that the team “kept the energy high throughout the match”; this win reflects diligence, determination, and hardwork.
Balassi added that the win is “the cherry on top of a great season that was a lot of fun.”
Many returning players, like Balassi, are excited to see what the next season has in store.
