Grapplers Win Freedom Duals Title
December 10, 2011
The wrestling team won first place in its division for the first time in 12 years at the Freedom Duals meet on Saturday, December 3.
The team, headed by team captain and senior Chris Wellbrook, went 4-0 in their matches against Heritage, Cesar Chavez, Antioch, and Las Lomas.
Sophomore Grant Smith said, “the win was really big with the team. It was awesome to participate and help out my team. The Freedom Duals is a hard tournament full of great competition.”
Smith added, “I had a lot of help from my coach, Bob. He’s a really good coach.”
Senior Connor Murray said, “I’d say we just have an awesome team this year. It sucks that we lost [Senior Oghuzan Teker] in the second match, but Chris really stepped up his game as team captain and gave us pep talks.”
Both Wellbrook and Smith went 4-0, earning gold medals in their respective weight categories.
The team beat Heritage 34-34, Cesar Chavez 28-26, Antioch 27-21, and Las Lomas 30-22. “We took the win, and really want to get an NCS win,” said Smith. “We train hard every day for DFAL championships.”
