College and Career Center Provides Students With Valuable UC Information

On Wednesday September 20th, the College and Career Center hosted a UC College Applications talk during Academy. The informational talk was delivered by Campo counselor and UC Berkeley Admissions Officer, Duane Magno. He discussed the overall application process and key factors the UC schools are looking for, specifically UC Berkeley. “It was really helpful to get advice from someone who’s actually involved in the process,” said senior Sophie Lederle.

The talk was catered towards seniors currently applying to UC schools, however, it was open to everyone, and around 25 students attended.

Senior Mia Lawrence said Magno explained that “the way you list, sort and how you describe your extracurriculars is very important because two people can do the same thing but…how they showed leadership, how involved they were can make a difference.”

Senior Anna Chen said “Mr. Magno reviewed all the general parts of the UC application and how to properly fill out your courses and answer personal interest questions.”

Highlighting specific writing techniques when submitting an application was something Magno also addressed. “He said you don’t need to use a lot of flowery language, you just need to get down to the facts,” said Lederle.

Lawrence said the talk was “really helpful.” “I thought the talk was really interesting and it was a really good comprehensive review,” said Chen.

Many students in attendance at the College and Career Center talk found it beneficial.
