Campolindo started the 2023-2024 year off strong with a fun-filled spirit week, 8/21-8/25, and a Welcome Back rally on that Friday. Students dressed up the entire week with different themes each day. Sophomore Maddie Collins said “there was no [overall] theme…it was more what we thought people would enjoy…there was a lot of school spirit going around.”
Monday was the first day of spirit week, where students and teachers dressed in red, white and blue for U.S.A. day. On Tuesday, everyone was encouraged to wear swim safety gear, ranging from goggles to pool floaties and life vests. On Wednesday, students wore pink for the Barbie theme, which tied into the cheer dance during the rally on Friday. On Thursday, students decided between being a soccer or barbeque parent. The week concluded with a red out and a rally during academy.
“We do rally prep before every single rally,” said Collins when asked about the rally’s behind the scenes preparation. “Around 8 o’clock we set up the screen and decorations. [Then] we do a run-through for the rally to ensure everything goes smoothly.”
The rally started off with a video to get students hyped up. Once the rally leaders had done the roll calls, fall sports participants engaged in a game of tug-of-war. In a competitive game out of three points, Team Two, the football and cross country athletes, won.
Afterward, students and new teachers played a round of telephone charades. The first person in the line acted out a phrase, which was “shark attack in the red sea”. The second person in line had noise canceling headphones on and tried to guess what the mystery phrase was. Once the second person had figured it out, they repeated the same step with the third person, until one of the three teams was able to figure out the phrase.
Afterwards, both Sideline and Comp Cheer performed, with Sideline’s Barbie Dance and Comp’s Friday Night Lights Dance.
Leadership then welcomed up senior and freshman sibling pairs for a game to see how well the freshmen really knew their older siblings. If the freshmen did not answer a question correctly, they were pied in the face.
For freshmen, this spirit week was also a welcome rally considering this was their first experience of campo culture and spirit. Freshman Madeline Sheng-Williams said she “thought it was really interesting to see all the activities that they did…I thought the sibling trivia event was funny.”
When asked what leadership wanted to improve at the next rally, representative sophomore Rodrigo Dominguez said they wanted to include “more people from other extracurriculars and …better diversity of students is something that we’re working on.” He said that, “we added more clubs compared to previous times, but we want to add more of it.”
The rally concluded with a game where teachers and staff threw items into either the trash can, recycling can, or compost can to promote sustainability at Campo.
