La Puma co-sports editor Casey Miller has been accepted to the “Newsroom by the Bay” (NBTB) program, a week-long summer camp at Stanford University for high school students passionate about journalism and technology.

According to the NBTB website, the program “blends tried-and-true journalism curricula with 21st century digital literacy multimedia training.” Participants will also have the opportunity to visit professional newspaper headquarters throughout the Bay Area.

“I’m excited to meet editors from newspapers like the SF Chronicle, which is pretty cool,” said Miller.

The NBTB program has a 1:8 ratio of faculty to students, and attracts students from all over the globe.

Miller submitted an online application, along with a letter of recommendation from La Puma adviser Chuck Woolridge, and found out on March 1 that she was accepted to the program. This is the first time Miller is going to the camp.

“I was thinking about doing a 2 week journalism camp at Duke, but I think Newsroom by the Bay is a good starting place for me,” said Miller.

Miller’s success is an example of the opportunities that high school journalism provides. It can open up avenues to investigate topics of interest and develop literacy in a variety of media modalities.  La Puma staff members develop composition skills, graphic design and electronic publishing prowess, photography and videography expertise, and the collaborative tools necessary for working in a student run media production lab.

According to Woolridge, “High School journalism is an option students should consider if they are trying to develop their skills in research and writing in preparation for the rigor of college academics.  It is an academic elective that develops vital skills for students who wish to be successful in the information age.  It also fulfills college admission requirements, and looks good on transcripts.”

Miller will continue to pursue opportunities in the field of journalism. “I hope to earn journalistic skills that will help me in La Puma and publications down the road,” said Miller.
