Campo’s varsity boys volleyball team took first in the silver division at the Las Vegas boys volleyball tournament on March 16.
Junior Kai Iwasaki said that the team could have done better but overall the team had a lot of growth. Iwasaki thinks that the team's main challenge was letting the other teams go on long point runs and not being able to stop them. Some of his tournament highlights were, “hanging out with the guys. I had a really good time when it was the third game on the first day, I got three pickups as libero that were really good passes.” Iwasaki thinks that the main goal for future tournaments and games is just playing to their best ability. He also thinks that more sports should have more tournaments like the one he attended.
Sophomore Jaden Ta thinks that the team needs to be more relaxed. According to Ta, their success “was adapting to other teams.” He enjoyed staying at the hotel with his teammates which provided a positive bonding experience for him.
When asked about how he felt about how the tournament went, junior Julian Lueder said, “I feel like it’s not as easy as ‘a yeah it went well’ or 'no it didn’t go well’. I would rate it a 7/10 on the wellness meter.” A highlight for him was driving down to guitar center with his dad, playing guitar, and chilling in the hot tub with the team. According to Lueder, Coach Dave Chen said that they need to raise their maximum at practice so they can perform better on game days because their performance worsens due to anxiety and stress.
Overall the tournament was successful, providing lots of playing time and opportunities for players to try new plays. The boys enjoyed it and were able to bond over the weekend.
