Many Campo sports will get a new home turf in fall 2025. Navy endzones, a redesigned “Campo C” in the middle of Bob Wilson stadium, and a new track are all part of a remodel coming this summer.
The field and track are redone on a ten-year cycle, but due to the state of the turf, the process was sped up by a year.
Athletes around Campo are looking forward to the upgrade.
“As much as I like our turf, there are some potholes in it. We have a lot of issues. It’s a necessary update,” says junior football player Everett Zellmer.
Football and soccer use the turf for very different things, but athletes from both sports agree that the current field needs to go. “At the 18-yard box there’s this one spot with a divot,” says senior soccer player Sean Mungunshagai. “During training, I’ve definitely dribbled over it and it messed up my touch.”
The turf and track were quite literally on the decline for the past few years. Or as athletic director Ray Meadows says, “our stadium is built on a hill and it’s actually slowly sliding down,” he says. “Part of the fix, they are building a retaining wall to prevent that sliding so it’s going to prevent future damage to the track. It’s a big expense.”
Over the past couple years, maintenance of the track has included patching up sections on the backstretch, the side closest to the baseball field. “As the hill slowly slides it starts to bubble which can be problematic for running on it,” says Meadows.
Aside from a new turf to cover the 120 yard field, each end zone will now be anchored by the school name in red against a navy background. The center of the field will have a giant red “C” with white accents.
Other than the aesthetic changes, the new field will add new markings for girls flag football, which became a school sport in fall 2023, says Meadows.
The field will be closed the day after graduation, a few weeks after the graduating class of 2025 holds their commencement ceremony on the field. It is scheduled to wrap up right before Cougar Day in August, meaning the first athletes to play on it could be class of 2029 freshman playing ultimate frisbee the day before their freshman year starts.
