On Saturday March 15th, 35 varsity athletes from Campolindo’s swim and dive team competed at the 50th annual Mission Viejo Invitational meet at the Mission Viejo Olympic complex in Los Angeles. The meet had preliminary trial heats in the morning and then finals and relay heats in the evening. The women’s swimmers were able to take home a win with 782 points, and with the help of the mens’ team swimmers Campolindo also won in the combined team scoring.
The trip was three days long and accompanying the meet was a trip to Newport beach and a night at the Irvine Spectrum mall.
Freshman Quinn Baker swam at the meet for the first time this year, competing in the “200 and 500 yard freestyle.” Baker enjoyed the trip especially “the beach day on Sunday and the bus ride.” She had many highlights from the trip including “getting third in the 500 freestyle and getting a best time” as well as “the relays” where the freshman had fun cheering on her teammates.
“The trip was really fun and I think it really grew me closer to my teammates,” said sophomore Abbie Adams. She “enjoyed the swimming” but her favorite part of the trip was “going to the beach or spending time at Irvine Spectrum mall.” Among the many highlights from the meet Adams said her personal favorites were “the girls winning first overall.”
Freshman Fidelya Al-Gozaly competed in the 200 and 100 yard freestyle events at the meet. The freshman enjoyed, “the team all cheering for each other and supporting one another” throughout the meet and was very proud of “the girls winning.” Her favorite memory from the trip was “getting to know new people and going to the Irvine Spectrum mall.”
Mission Viejo was a promising start for the Campolindo womens’ swim team and these athletes hope to continue to improve as a team for the upcoming DAL league championship meet later this spring.
