Despite the rainy weather, nine athletes were celebrated at lunch for the NCAA’s National Fall Signing Day in the big gym on November 13, 2024. National Signing Day celebrates a day where high school senior athletes formally sign their National Letters of Intent, informally known as NLI, to their respective colleges. By signing these letters, these athletes formally bind themselves to their respective collegiate teams.
As a long standing tradition throughout the school, NLI Signing Day has been celebrated twice every year for the past school years. The day recognizes the school’s high athletic and academic culture as many athletes sign to the top Division 1 schools which exceed both in such impressive fields of accomplishment.
On signing day, family, coaches, and friends all gathered to see the NLI commits. Hosted by leadership members, senior Avery Jules and junior Ella Binney, leadership made brief introductions regarding the event before describing each commit’s achievements spanning their athletic career thus far.
Lasting over the period of lunch, attendees signed their letters of intent, sharing their words of celebration and thanks with those who have supported them throughout their athletic careers. These thanks weren’t limited to family and coaches, as many athletes extended these words to their friends and teammates as well. Campo athletes shared how these people had affected their athletic and personal livelihoods, contributing to the themes of community which are promoted throughout the Campo athletics’ programs.
“First, I want to thank my teammates. You guys are my family,” started senior Sammy Frazier in her celebratory NLI speech. “The memories we’ve made together, the lessons I’ve learned alongside you all will stay with me forever.”
Some of these commits shared how they felt like NLI Signing Day felt like another stepping stone in their athletic career. “It really meant the world. It definitely was a weight lifted off my shoulders,” said senior Avery Sullivan. Sullivan signed to SDSU where she will be playing water polo and studying business management in the fall. “It’s one step closer to getting to college which is really nice.”
“I just want to say how incredibly grateful and excited I am for the next four years at Harvard. Along with that, I am thrilled for all the people sitting next to me and I’m excited for their achievements and to see where the next four years it takes them,” said senior Isabelle Goldstein during her commitment speech.
The senior athletes honored at this ceremony included: Garret Chivers (Pepperdine University), Nikki Frazier (Indiana University), Sammy Frazier (Indiana University), Isabelle Goldstein (Harvard University), Dylan King (Loyola Marymount University), William Myers (Occidental College), Hayden O’Hare (UCLA), Aveya Stone (California Polytechnic State University), and Avery Sullivan (San Diego State University).
