On the pool deck of the Soda Aquatic Center, many senior girls have decided to dive into the water for their final season as high school athletes.
The Campolindo swim team has demonstrated depth and talent on the girls’ side with a historic winning streak. Just last year the girls took home the 2nd place title at NCS and the CIF state meet. This year, they hope to continue this success with the leadership and wisdom from the senior girls.
“I’ve been swimming for 12 years, including my 4 years with Campo,” said senior Maddie Blackwell. She has been racing the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and 100m butterfly as her main events. As for goals, Blackwell noted that “the girls [team] wants to win state this year and individually I want to swim my best and spend the last months with the people I’ve swam with all these years.” Her favorite part of high school swimming has been, “spending time with the people I’ve gotten to know from school, practice, and meets.” For the new swimmers participating in their first swim season with Campo, Blackwell advised to “not stress out, have fun, and get to know as many people as you can.”
“I have found my friends and group within swimming,” said senior Hazel Krozek who has been swimming since she was “about 6 years old all the way up to high school.” As a team this season, Krozek has goals to see, “more comradery and for everyone to all be together.” In her individual events of butterfly and freestyle, she aims to, “get faster times.” To the new swimmers, she noted that, “[the team] is one big family and we are ready for you to join us in a great season.”
Senior Mia DeLuca has been in the water since she was two years old. Through her four years in high school she has competed “mostly breaststroke” but she is always open to try other events. “For the team I’d love for us to get the NCS crown back from Carondelet and individually I’d love to go to NCS this year as well,” said DeLuca in response to her goals for the 2024 season. Her favorite part of swimming in high school has been, “seeing all of varsity and JV come together” at joint practice on Fridays and at swim meets. DeLuca advised the first-year swimmers to, “not get discouraged by the size or speed of the team and always keep trying your best.”
The girls’ swim team will begin the path to a successful season and achieve their goals starting at their first home dual meet against Clayton Valley on March 8th.
