Boys’ basketball defeated Northgate at home on January 8, 70-57.

“The team’s been practicing hard, and we just came off a big win in Modesto, so I’m hoping that we can turn our recent success into a league championship,” said senior team captain Jake Chan.

Chan and his teammates were hoping to play with fellow captain David Ahazie, who suffered a fracture to his finger 2 weeks ago, but the senior was not yet cleared by his doctor.

Even though he was missing a top player, coach Steven Dyer said he was looking forward to the “formidable challenge” Northgate proved to be.

That challenge began early in the game, with the Broncos finishing the 1st quarter leading, 18-16. The Cougars continued to trail at the half, 33-30.

“We definitely started the game nonchalant. But at the half we realized what we needed to do to win and came out with a sense of urgency,” said junior Carter Mahaney.

Northgate’s student section was particularly boisterous as the Broncos attempted to hold off the Cougars rally in the 2nd half. In spite of the home advantage, Northgate gave up the lead in the 3rd period.

The Cougars went on to score 24 points in the 4th quarter to seal the victory.
