Volleyball Wins NCS Title over Redwood

Boys’ varsity volleyball beat the Redwood Giants to win the Division II North Coast Section Championship on May 19. The 3-1 victory propels the Cougars to the NorCal playoffs.

“It was all about staying paced, mentally still,” said head coach David Chen. “They did it when they wanted to. It helped that senior leadership guided them.”

“The team has been performing well,” added senior Rupert Dusauzay.

Campolindo won the 1st set, 25-17. Redwood rebounded to win the 2nd set before struggling to avoid costly errors.

“Redwood played an amazing game,” said Chen. “They were passionate, driven, and motivated. But they were not only battling us, they were battling themselves.”

Chen was also critical of his own team’s play. “We could’ve done a better job at staying focused,” said Chen.

The Cougars managed to close out the match with wins in the 3rd and 4th sets.

According to Chen, his team showed improvement since the previous meeting with Redwood at a tournament earlier in the spring.

“This time, we had a set lineup of where we wanted our players to be,” said Chen. “Our players showed an amazing amount of growth.”

“The 1st tournament we were trying to find ourselves, but as the season progressed we realized our roles and embraced them,” said senior Gage Worsley.

The game concluded with a small awards ceremony for the players of both teams, with each player receiving a medal.

The next step for the squad is the NorCal tournament, which the players feel confident they can win.

“I think that if we work hard and practice like we always have, we’ll have a pretty good shot,” said Dusauzay.
