Varsity softball defeated rival Miramonte 13-2 on May 18 to finish their regular season. With a 6-4 league record the Cougars will advance to the North Coast Section playoffs as the 12th seed.

Finishing the regular season with a victory was particularly satisfying for head coach Wayne Stephens.

“We’ve never won our last game in 3 years,” said Stephens. “This win was huge.”

“We knew we had to work to win, but once we started it just felt natural,” added catcher Katelyn Poole.

Campolindo built a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. This was followed by a 7-run 2nd inning for the Cougars to put the game away.

“It was one of the best games we’ve played,” said head coach Wayne Stephens.”Everybody had a part.”

The game ended by rule in the 5th inning when Campolindo extended its lead with 5 more runs.

“This was far better than anything we’ve accomplished,” said Stephens.

After the game, Stephens and the team honored senior Sydni Gordon.

“I’m so sad that Sydni’s leaving us,” said sophomore and team captain Tara Mcateer. “She’s a great asset to the team and somebody everyone looks up to.”

“We’re really going to miss her,” added Poole. “She’s always full of energy and a big part of the team.”

Stephens also presented his team with the NCS Academic Achievement Award for maintaining the highest collective GPA in the section.

The squad plays Analy in the first round of the NCS playoffs Wednesday, May 24.

“NCS is going to be hard because we’re playing a lot of teams that we’ve never seen,” said Mcateer.

“We at least have a chance,” said Poole.
