Girls’ Hoops Beats Dons, Leads League

Varsity girls’ basketball continued their winning streak with a win over Acalanes, 72- 56, on February 10. The victory puts the Cougars in a tie with Miramonte for the league lead.
“[Acalanes was a] much tougher team than expected,” starting shooting guard Ashley Thoms said. Acalanes put up a fight in the 1st quarter, exchanging buckets with the Cougars.
Thoms described the 1st half as “shaky, but 2nd half went really well. [We] took care of everything.”
“In the 1st half we did a great job with the game plan, but we missed easy shots,” said Head Coach Art Thoms.
“We came out with pretty flat energy, but I think in the 2nd half we played a lot better,” said captain and small forward Jessi O’Reilly. “Wasn’t one of our best games, but anytime we all play together and incorporate everyone, it always ends well,” she added.
The Cougars put their slow start behind them in the 2nd half, as they never relinquished the lead, in spite of outstanding play from on of the Dons’ stars. “Brooke Panfili did a great job for Acalanes… great player,” said Coach Thoms, commending the Acalanes senior.
With their win against the Dons, Campolindo is now 7-1 in league. According to Coach Thoms, the team is looking for consistency from all of the players going into the playoffs.
According to O’Reilly, the Cougars have a tie-breaker advantage over Miramonte should the season end with both teams holding the same record. She expects her squad to be either the 2 or 3 seed heading into the NCS tournament.
In addition to the victory, the Cougars also celebrated it’s senior class. “It was also a special night for our only senior on the team, Jessica Sanchez. She is a good player and person,” said Coach Thoms.
The team’s next game is on February 14 against the College Park Falcons.
