Boys’ soccer scored 7 goals in their game against El Cerrito, the most goals they have scored in a game since 2013. The Cougars won the game 7-0 at home on January 10.
Campolindo’s all time record for goals scored remains 8, which was accomplished against Pinole Valley in 2010.
Freshman Seppi Ortman believes Saturday’s score is indicative of the cohesiveness he has established with his teammates. “It’s good to see how we have improved through the year; the first time we beat them 4 to nothing and then on Saturday we won 7 -0,” he said.
“Our teamwork has come together and we are moving the ball better and overall our fitness is better,” Ortman added.
According to Sean Qualls, the substitutes played a role in the lopsided win. “A lot of the substitutes, like the Dusauzay brothers and the Russos, all did a great job of coming in late into the game and scoring some goals,” he said.
Qualls added, “They [the freshmen] did surprisingly well, each game they have gotten better.”
Junior Kyle O’Connell also noted that the freshman players are improving, but still have some work to do. “We can already see it. They need to get more physical though. They are kind of small, but that just takes time,” he said.
The win against El Cerrito was the largest margin of victory this season.
The Cougars also tied their record for most assists, which was previously established against El Cerrito in 2011.
While the victory provided confidence, El Cerrito is not a league opponent. The Cougars will face better competition as they continue through the DFAL round robin.
“We will definitely have tougher opponents next week and this week. Teams like Dublin have only let one goal slip past them, but it was [Campo’s goal], so there is a decent chance that we will have a chance of winning,” O’ Connell said.
Campo’s current standing is at 8-4-1, and only trails league-leading Dublin.
Campolindo’s 34 goals and 34 assists for the season are above the national average of 24 goals and 17 assists.
