The annual Powderpuff football games were played during the week of October 13-18. The last game, between the junior and seniors, was held at halftime of the homecoming football game against Las Lomas on Friday night.
The seniors were victorious in every game throughout the week.
Powderpuff is a football tradition in many high schools across the country in which girls play using modified rules.
The first two games were played at lunch on Tuesday, October 14. The freshmen faced off against the seniors, while the sophomores played the juniors. The freshman lost to the seniors, 0-20.
The game between the sophomores and juniors, was closer. The juniors defeated the sophomores by a final score of 6-8.
On Wednesday, October 15, the seniors played the sophomores, while the juniors played the freshman. The juniors succeeded in defeating the freshmen and advanced to the final match. Once again, the seniors were victorious and ensured their spot against the juniors. Both the freshmen and the sophomores were winless.
During halftime of the homecoming football game, the juniors started with the ball and moved steadily down the field. They were close to the end zone, but threw an interception.
Senior running back Mary Hildeburn scored the first and only touchdown of the game, securing a victory for the seniors.
Hildeburn, who played Powderpuff all four years, refused to take all the credit for her score. “It wouldn’t have happened unless Brooke Presten and Allison Tsuboi clutched it,” she said.
The juniors may have lost, but they refused to admit it. “Juniors still won!” said Jack Lawrence, the junior coach.
“[The seniors] like to play dirty,” joked junior Lisa Bramley after the game. “That’s why they won.”
