Boys’ basketball defeated Dougherty Valley 87-50 at home on January 31. The contest was highlighted by 3 dunks, 2 by Chris Hansen, and 1 by Justin Dunn.
Before the game, senior point guard Andrew Zolintakis hoped their height advantage would pay off. “We have to give the ball to our big guys like Chris Hansen, Sterling [Strother], and Justin Dunn,” he said.
Early in the 1st quarter, Zolintakis made 2 free throws, which tied the game at 4. After a defensive stop, Zolintakis was fouled again, and made both free throws.
According to sophomore center Sterling Strother, this energize the Cougars. “I feel we finally asserted ourselves, because we came out too relaxed,” he said.
Later in the 1st quarter, after 2 dunks by center Chris Hansen, Dougherty Valley called a timeout. The break didn’t help the visitors however as the Cougars went on a 10 point run to finish the quarter.
Campolindo led 25-9 at the end of the 1st quarter and built the lead to 44-28 by the half.
At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, power forward Justin Dunn picked up a Doughert Valley turnover and crossed the court for another dunk.
According to head coach Matt Watson, the Cougars played well on both sides of the ball, “[We] scored the ball. [We] did a good job on defense,” he said.
Hansen was proud of his teams effort. “We stayed together as a team,” he said.
“I think we played with good effort and ran the floor pretty well,” Strother said.
Dougherty Valley head coach Mike Hansen said, “They make a lot of shots, and we did not.”
Campo improves to 15-6, and 6-0 in league.
