Girls’ basketball defeated league rivals Las Lomas 71-55 in a home game on January 14.
According to Campo coach Art Thoms, his squad has beaten the Knights “quite a few years in a row.”
“We thought we would win, but we didn’t want to underestimate them, so we came out as we would in any other game,” said senior guard Ashley Ewing.
Still, Thoms said, “Las Lomas is a much improved team from last year. We knew they’d give us a fight.”
Thoms stressed the need for his team to stay grounded during the game. “I talked to the girls about not looking ahead to other games and focusing on Las Lomas,” he said.
According to Ewing, the game was “pretty close” in the 1st half.
Las Lomas also made it tough in the second half. “The other team closed the gap down to 9 in the 4th quarter, but the girls responded well and kept their composure and made some big shots in the end,” Thoms said.
Ewing said they “just stayed calm and ended up beating them by a good amount.”
Freshman Brooke Panfili scored 2 points in the 4th quarter. Panfili said she was thinking that “we needed to get up by more points.”
“It was just another win to start the season,” Panfili said. “We’re happy that we won because it helps our record.” The team is now 3-0 in DFAL and 9-5 overall.
“We’re just trying to build and win one game at a time. Every team in the league is good, so we don’t take anyone lightly,” Thoms said.
