Girls’ varsity volleyball played in the Stockton Classic tournament at Lincoln High School in Stockton on October 19. The team played 4 matches, winning 2 and losing 2.
The 1st match against Redwood High School was close, with a score of 21-25 in the 1st set and 16-25 in the 2nd. “Despite the loss, we played really well,” setter Kenzie Brown said. “Redwood is a strong team.”
The 2nd match was against Berkeley High School and Campolindo won after going to a 3rd set. “I think the biggest thing against Berkeley was that we just got out of our heads,” said assistant coach Dave Chen.
Campolindo lost the 3rd match, winning the 1st set 25-18 but losing the 2nd and 3rd. However, they came back beating Vista del Lago High School 25-21 in the 1st set and 25-22 in the 2nd. “Even though it was a really long day, we kept up our energy,” Brown said.
Head coach John Vuong said, “One of our goals is to have the [players] that haven’t had a chance to play go ahead and compete and get used to the intensity of the game.” He said the team is growing and improving every day. “At every tournament we improve and find things to work on.”
Freshman Janelle Gong thought the team played well together. “When we were struggling, we picked each other up,” she said. “If we continue to play the way we have, we’ll be ready for the postseason.”
As for the rest of the season, both players and coaches are enthusiastic. Campolindo is 6-0 in league so far. “Our goal is to hopefully capture the league title and get into the postseason,” Vuong said. Chen added, “I think we’ll be battle-tested by that point.”
