The Annual Moraga 4th July Race, which supports Campolindo’s athletic programs, will again kick off the town’s holiday celebration.
The event offers both a 2 mile rand a 5 mile run, and an 800m kiddie run. The 2 mile and 5 mile racers will receive an event t-shirt and a pancake breakfast. Each kiddie racer earns a medal.
The Pancake breakfast is provide at the Moraga Commons by the Lamorinda Youth Association.
All proceeds from the event help to fund Campolindo’s premier athletic programs, like the Cougar track and field team. “They support us by running in it,” explained junior track captain Haley Shipway.
“I love the 4th of July Race,” added varsity cross country athlete Cameron Sun said. “I think it brings the community together.” The community tradition offers an opportunity for Campolindo students to catch up after being away from campus for several weeks in the summer.
Shipway also noted the event’s importance in providing exposure for the Campolindo athletic teams. “It gets a lot of people to come out for the team,” Shipway said.
Typically, participants and spectators begin filling up the Moraga shopping center parking lot by 7:00am on race day. In addition to race day t-shirt pick up, many opt to show their support of the sports programs with temporary tattoos provided by the track and field squad.
“Everyone gets tattoos,” Sun said.
The finish line is just across the street from the Moraga Commons. Pancakes are already cooking when the winner steps up to the LMYA tent. The finish line food has become a big hit. “They stick the little American flags in the pancakes,” said Shipway.
The 2 mile race follows Moraga Road until it hits the Moraga bike trail, which it follows back to the finish line. The 5 mile race starts and finishes in the same spots, but has an extra loop which runs along Camino Pablo Road, Rimer, and Tharp.
All Moraga residents are encouraged to participate in this annual event, which funds Campolindo’s sports programs.
