Boys’ volleyball won the NorCal quarterfinal match on their home court against Sir Francis Drake on May 21. They swept all 3 sets, with scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-12.
Coach Dave Chen was excited about defeating Drake. “It’s a big win,” said Chen. “Drake is a big rival of ours.”
According to sophomore co-captain Joe Worsley, the team played Drake in prior years with mixed results. 3 years ago, Drake defeated Campo at NCS finals. However, Campo defeated Drake 2 years ago at NCS and last year in a tournament.
According to Chen, this is the 1st year that there has been a NorCal competition for boys’ volleyball. Before, the farthest the team could go was NCS. “It’s like a new thing for all of us, so it was exciting to come out 3-0 against Drake,” said sophomore setter Yize Dong.
According to Worsley, the team was unsure of the outcome during the game.
“During the 2nd set, there was a period where things didn’t go well for us,” said Dong. “We kept our head up and kept playing the game. And in the end, it worked out.”
The squad played St. Patrick/St. Vincent on May 23 and won, advancing to the NorCal Championships on May 25 at Dublin High School.
