The football team started the season with victories against Sacred Heart, Acalanes, Miramonte, and Las Lomas. The team has a record of 5-1, with only one loss against El Cerrito.
Injured quarterback Brett Stephens said, “I think we’ve been really successful so far, and we’re really coming together as a team.” The team’s goal is to win the North Coast Section championship for the second consecutive year, according to Stephens.
Given the circumstances, head coach Kevin Macy is surprised by the success. “The defense is doing a great job, especially considering there are no returning starters from last year’s team,” said Macy. He attributes the team’s winning to “Brett Stephens coming back as one of the few returning players, and the young receivers we have on the team.” However, due to a recent shoulder injury, Stephens is out for the remainder of the regular season.
Nevertheless, according to Stephens, the team has put in a lot of hard work, such as conditioning and going to camp in Reno last summer. In addition, Stephens said, “Sticking to our game plans each week and executing what the coaches go over with us is our key to winning.”
Turnout for games continue to increase, according to ASB president Ryan Gannett. Games against rivals have had a big turnout. “The Miramonte game was a huge success,” said Gannett. “I think turnouts will get bigger as the team starts winning more games.”
The success of the football team has inspired greater sprit across campus. Senior class Vice President Sophie Seiberth said, “We’re on a really great track to success, so we can get back to where we were last year with school spirit and pride.”
