With five minutes until opening, students prepared for their roles during the off-season with a head full of ambition and conviction that the new year was theirs to claim. Our goals are diverse yet simultaneously communal: behind the scenes of getting accepted into our dream college, becoming the captain of the volleyball team, or running successful fundraisers for clubs lays an intense hunger for self-fulfillment and purpose.
Goals like these are met crossfire with a school year which has so far pushed us all politically, academically, and socially. We’ve put on our homecoming dresses and suits and watched a political landscape become further divided, all the while continuing to finish assignments on time. As the semester moves toward the second half, the neverending to-dos and anxieties have taken away crucial time for self-reflection. Wrapped up in our Jurassic Parks, Candy Lands, and Monopolys, we lose ourselves in the game of life.
It’s in overbearing times like these where a reminder of who we are is most needed. Whether that be looking back at past pieces of creation from multimedia arts, executing Scouts projects, or becoming more active in politics, practicing the creeds we devote ourselves to is crucial to maintaining our sense of purpose, hope, and control.
When the world tests our resilience and confidence, Campo is the perfect training ground as we’re forced to take steps back to find our way forward. Take advantage of the opportunities you’re surrounded by and create where you see fit. Surrounded by the support of our friends, teachers, and teammates, there’s no better time to claim the roles we want to play now and in the future.
In the upcoming months, it’s no doubt that times of hardship are inevitable. In moments that test who we are the most, let’s remind ourselves that our destinies are in our control. Our narrative is to be claimed and our essence is to be defined. That being said, a quintessential question remains: Who do you want to be remembered as when the curtain closes?
