On January 16 Campo participated in the AUHSD Shakespeare Drama Festival at the Del Valle campus where drama students performed short plays alongside other schools. The performances are structured with each group getting 10 minutes to reenact a Shakespeare story with only using 4 chairs and dressed in all black, while maintaining the story and language in the original story. Freshman in the Drama 1 class follow the same structure using the film, Inside Out 2. The Shakespeare Festival is run by the Theatre and Art program in the AUHSD district and English and Drama teacher Chriss McNevin.
Students regard it as a fun experience where they can hang out and watch the other schools, perform and make friends. Junior Reve Ojeda said the festival “was really fun! It was really cool to see all the other performances…it was really like eye opening.” These performances allow students to see how other schools interpret the Shakespearean text, and use the limited props and costumes to help them explain the story.
Junior Emma Hudak who has been involved with drama and Shakesfest before said “It’s really fun every year. I get to meet other kids from other schools. I have made a lot of friends through Shakesfest.” The Drama festival creates community in Campo drama and outside; it helps introduce students here to students at different schools with the same interests and bring them all together in that supportive environment of the Shakespeare Festival. More students have said that they enjoy the festival alot from preparing for it to performing and hanging out and watching the other students perform.
Mr. McNevin said participating in the festival is really “amazing to see all of the Theatre Arts/Drama students in AUHSD get together for a common cause and to celebrate and support each other. It is one of the most positive days in the entire academic year.” The Festival has a major positive impact on the students and the school it helps create a supportive environment and community in Drama outside of Campo and within the Campo drama.
