On September 18, 2024, the College and Career Center hosted their annual ‘Junior Check-in,’ an academy designed to ensure that Campo juniors are on track to meet their future goals regarding higher education.
Along with general advice on grades, extracurriculars, and college counselor check-ins, juniors who attended were also introduced to a valuable resource tool that was introduced to Campo last year and yet remains largely unknown to this year’s class: MaiaLearning. MaiaLearning is an online website and academic planning tool, which gives students support with building resumes, college research, and applications.
While many juniors may be more familiar with the former website ‘Naviance,’ college counselors strongly encourage making the switch. When asked about his thoughts on these changes junior Liam Dinwiddie stated, “I did use Naviance a little bit, but not to the extent that [I used] MaiaLearning. MaiaLearning is a lot better and a lot more organized from a website standpoint. I’m glad they switched.”
The website is known as a hub for college research, offering access to all colleges and universities nationwide and internationally. “On MaiaLearning there was a section for universities,” said junior Isabelle Culinco, “…you could filter out universities based on location and add schools you wanted…it also had descriptions of each school and what majors they have.”
MaiaLearning provides easy accessibility to extensive information regarding colleges in one location. General statistics, majors, and financial aid can all be found using the website. Interesting schools can be added to students’ considering lists, aiding them in their college search. To sign up for college visits for schools of interest, students must sign up through MaiaLearning to confirm their attendance.
“It gives people the opportunity to see colleges and their acceptance rates. It can also show past Campolindo students that have been accepted [to these colleges] and what their academic statistics were,” said junior Simon Uranga. Found under the admissions tab, MaiaLearning used graphs to compare users’ GPA and SAT to students who applied from previous years.
Furthermore, Campo counselors need students to activate their MaiaLearning accounts in order to write letters of recommendation for college applications. Creating an active account which includes extracurricular activities as well as statistics aids counselors in creating an efficient process for their student recommendations.
“It’s a really helpful way to get ahead in college applications,” concluded Uranga. “I recommend people use it if they want to track everything in a really easy and straightforward way.”
