On April 20th, the junior class celebrated their ‘Santorini Nights’ themed prom at the Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland. The venue was decked out in blue and gold accents, with white and pink flowers to enhance the Mediterranean feel of the venue and make the theme stand out.
At the event there were activities like dancing, blackjack, and a photo booth that many students enjoyed. A majority of the students had a very fun time dancing. “The music was good and everyone was on the dance floor,” said junior Tabitha Bearce.
There were drinks like coca-cola and lemonade served at bars. Food-wise, there were mediterranean-style appetizers like dolmas, naan, hummus, and baba ghanoush. For dinner they served salad along with a student’s choice of a chicken, beef, or pasta dinner. For dessert there were cookies and cake slices. “The food was really good,” said junior Ryder Toal.
In order to make things go smoothly, this year’s prom planners started planning it before the last prom even happened. “We started planning prom winter of last year,” said junior Ellie Stephens. They took notes about the previous junior’s likes and dislikes about the event and applied them to this year’s prom.
A few changes were made during the planning of this year’s prom. For one, the prom last year had free sit ins, where people could sit at any table at the venue. This created an issue where students weren’t always able to sit with all of their friends, leaving some people to sit with people they weren’t as familiar with.
To solve this issue and make dining tables more cohesive, this year’s prom committee issued a google form where people could choose up to 10 friends to share a table with. “We made sure to make a point of letting people pick who they want to sit at a table with,” said Stephens.
This approach seemed to go very well, as many students seemed content with the event. “It was all just very well planned and organized,” said junior Zach Dupree from Piedmont High School. The students were able to sit and interact with who they wanted during dinner time, and after they were able to hang out with others on the outdoor deck area or on the dance floor. This created an a fun atmosphere that students enjoyed. “I like that it’s very social,” said junior Danielle Lee.
