Campo and Miramonte’s South Asian Student Union enjoyed a celebratory field trip in San Francisco on Monday, March 25. There were 20 student spots for a day filled with exciting activities including visiting the Asian Art Museum. Students used BART from Orinda to get to San Francisco.
Vice president of the South Asian Student Union junior Meeran Gill said, “[both schools] split the planning with Miramonte. We had a joint itinerary and they helped pick the food places. [They] figured it out together.”
Around 9 a.m., students arrived at the UN Plaza and walked around and went to a cafe around 9:30 before heading to the museum. They spent two hours enjoying the art before heading to lunch. Lunch took place at Jefferson square park. Afterwards, students began their Holi celebration at the park before heading home.
Sophomore Mae Chilton said her favorite part of the trip was “going to the museum; [she] thought it was really interesting and going with friends made it a lot more fun because it’s such a nice experience to share.” Gill enjoyed “seeing the art in the museum, especially all the ancient sculptures.”
Chilton also “really liked the Holi festival where they sprayed colored powders everywhere…it was a really unique and fun experience I had never had before.”
The celebration of Holi is an important part of South Asian culture. Along with Gill, co-vice president junior Sidd Iyer helped organize this trip as a way to honor this tradition. Gill and Iyer had assistance from counselor Dhaliwal in planning activities and organizing transportation.
The South Asian Student Union has also been orchestrating other activities this year. “Last week we did a movie night which went pretty well, around 10 to 15 people came…We’re going to do some more things before the end of the year too,” said Iyer. He hopes to continue being active with the union and providing opportunities for members to celebrate their culture and come together.
