The Mardi Gras Dance that was held at Miramonte took place on February 23 and was hosted by Black Student Union (BSU) with all four schools in the districts attending.
The dance started at 7 pm and ended around 9 pm. During that time frame, multiple activities could be done. There was a temporary tattoo place in the choir room right by the gym where you could let loose and dance and there was a lot of food: including mac and cheese, brownies, sweet potato pie and much more. Sophomore Malik Li positively stated: “The food was delicious. They had mac and cheese and barbeque ribs.”
The dance was held in the big gym in the front of the school. It cost ten dollars to attend and had around 250 people go. Sophomore Isabelle Cullinco said, “I think a decent amount of people came but compared to how many people are in the four schools it was a very small group.”
If people in the gym started getting tired from dancing and listening to the DJ, they could always walk outside and take a break. Before exiting the gym there was a photo stand where you could have a fun video of you and your friends posing. The outside area allowed them to enjoy the many food options they had. While outside you could sit down and eat, passing the time by chatting with friends.
While the dance had many positive comments there were many complaints on the DJ. Some say the music was playing too loudly. Many believe that the songs playing could have been better. Cullinco said “I didn’t like the DJ because the music was very loud and not very good for dancing.”
This dance gave people from all four schools the opportunity to meet new people and reunite with old friends. Sophomore Liv Maestre said, “I went with some of my miramonte friends so I met some of their friends as well.”
The promotion of this dance had varied opinions. While it was advertised through emails, posters, and announcements, many feel that the advertising could have been better seeing as everyone knew about the March Madness dance and not this one. Maestre said “I thought it was kind of interesting how the dance hosted by the BSU didn’t get a lot of promotion while i heard alot about the march madness dance”
While the opportunity for this dance was given to all four schools in the district, only around 250 people came. Despite the well advertising around campus other schools did not get the same. Li said “I would say for all schools there weren’t a lot of people that came.”
Overall the dance had a pretty good turnout. The food was delicious. Many students enjoyed a fun night of dancing with their friends and getting to know new people. Moreover the music may have been loud but many still were able to look past that and dance on the gym floor. Li said “It was very fun, the DJ was awesome and the music was booming. It was just awesome seeing the black culture being represented.”
