In room E13 on Friday, December 8th during lunch, Campo students attended a business College and Career Talk. Anthony Marino, the President of the company ThredUP, a thrifting and consignment business, came to give this talk.
Marino presented on what it was like creating a large, successful apparel marketplace and discussing vital components of e-commerce. He also informed students on how to become involved in internships in this field.
Senior Nina Damiano planned to attend. She said, “the ThredUP President was actually a student’s parent. They planned to talk about business strategies and marketing.”
Junior Matthew Sugiyama wasn’t able to attend the talk this year; however, he did attend the one that took place last year. Sugiyama was, “impressed with his journey to becoming the president because it was a pretty small company and he had to come up with the idea and over time he was able to develop partners, make connections and create a relatively big business.”
Last year he learned about marketing, “the president showed different milk cartons and asked which one appeals to you the most. One was a bunch of text and the other had statistics. He said the trick to marketing is knowing your audience…and who to appeal to. The milk is more for families and parents who want to look for the healthiest milk available.”
Sophomore Caryse Chang attended this year and “learned about how business is prevalent in many different industries of the world because every industry has a customer, seller, and product.” She “found the talks about how to get internships and what you do in an internship the most interesting.”
Students seemed to have appreciated the opportunity to educate themselves on the business world and felt inspired to explore their interests within it. Chang was “inspired by the different ways [one] combines passion with practicality in business.”
