New Garden Greenhouse Assembled
September 21, 2015
Through the combined efforts of students, teachers, and Global Student Embassy [GSE], a greenhouse has been constructed in the campus garden. Funding for this project came from the Rotary Club.
Tren Kauzer’s environmental science class worked on final preparations before the walls went up and the house was erected.
The greenhouse was built by Sierra Greenhouse, a company run by local businessman Bruce Noble. “I manufacture all this in the shop,” Noble said. “All in all it’s 8 working days.”
The greenhouse walls were built on August 26 and the roof was finished the next morning.
According to Chrissy Orangio, GSE program coordinator, the goal of the greenhouse is to grow more plants during the colder seasons and to include more students in garden activities. “It’s a great way to incorperate more classes,” Orangio said.
While the garden has existed on campus for a decade, it has only been utilized for broader activities in the last 4 years, according to science teacher Patrick Wildermuth. The greenhouse will help reduce the dependency on store purchased plants. “We have been spending money to put seedling in our garden,” said Chrissy.
The garden is intended to be an opportunity for students to work outdoors, interact with nature, and examine the world around them. “It’s really a community thing,” said Wildermuth.
Tomatoes will be the first plant grown in the greenhouse, and there is a possibility that succulents will make an appearance. The cycle of planting will be continued with each new generation of science students.
