With the summer season ending and the autumn season officially beginning, a new trend will start emerging in all sorts of ways at Campolindo, but especially with the food. As students start to settle more comfortably into their annual routine for the school season, many students grab a classic food item that they believe truly emulates the season of fall.
This fall, sophomore Reese Luster will be reaching for “anything pumpkin [flavored].” Luster added, “I feel that pumpkin pie is one of the most fall foods that you could have.” In addition to her love of pumpkin flavored items, Luster enjoys candy corn. “Candy corn is up there. It’s a classic,” said Luster.
Junior Katie Spillane also enjoys pumpkin flavored items. When asked what her favorite fall food was, Spillane responded by saying, “I really like pumpkin seeds.” She enjoys when “it’s Halloween and you get to cook pumpkin seeds.” However, despite her love for pumpkin seeds, Spillane does not care for “any of the Pumpkin Spice Lattes” or “pumpkin pie.”
“In general, I like good, sweet foods,” said junior Maryam Kermani when she was asked about her favorite fall foods. Kermani mentioned that she enjoys apple pie because it “is really warm in the middle, but it also has a crispiness to it. I like homemade the best, especially with vanilla ice cream on top.” She also expressed her love for mashed potatoes, but stated her dislike of stuffing, connecting both of the fall food to traditional Thanksgiving meals, as well as her appreciation for pumpkin spice chai lattes.
Similar to Luster and Spillane, sophomore Josh Jacob enjoys both “candy corn and pumpkin pie” but mentions that he is “not big on turkey…[he has] never liked [turkey],” despite saying that the most “fall food” is “probably turkey.” Jacob, despite not liking turkey, enjoys other Thanksgiving foods, claiming his favorite dish to be “stuffing.”
Freshman Hannah Buchman, despite the Thanksgiving food popularity every year, hates “gravy and the cranberry sauce, it just bothers [her]. Homemade cranberry sauce, yes. But the store bought chunky jelly version is a no.” This fall, in similar fashion to others, Buchman will be reaching for “a classic: pumpkin pie,” claiming it to be the most fall food. “Pumpkins, in general, are very ‘fall,’” said Buchman. She thinks “jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin seeds” give pumpkins their fall food status.
“I recommend Preppy Kitchen, or Sally’s Baking Addiction, [for] recipes,” Kermani added as she reflected on certain fall foods she wanted to share with others. “There’s a specific, really good recipe for pumpkin muffins that I like.”
The fall foods selected by Campo students are sure to keep the seasonal vibes. Unlike other seasonal cuisines, autumn has a popular variety of snacks to celebrate and symbolize not only the colors, but the holidays that come with the changing period. Reflected in thoughtful food selections or just in search of the next tasty snack, whether students select pumpkin seeds, candy corn, or turkey this season, the Campolindo community is sure to enjoy their treats as the year continues on with success.
